Detroit Newspapers And Unions At Bargaining Table
Negotiators for Detroit's two major newspapers are at the bargaining table hours before the contracts for journalists and other unionized paper workers are set to expire Friday, Oct. 15 at midnight.
The looming threat of steep pay cuts has had the unions bargaining over the last three months.
Newspaper Guild President, Lou Mleczko declined to comment on the specific options, but said that they are "trying to move toward an agreement, not a confrontation."
Mleczko believes that the pay cuts are step too far, even in the face of tough economic times.
"We all know the state of the newspaper industry, just like the state of the national and the local economy is not preferable," Mleczko said. "But we also know that these companies still have substantial resources and they need share in their activities with their employees."
