'Detroit Nation' Spreading Motor City Pride
DETROIT (WWJ) - Are you a member of the Detroit Nation? Rachel Jacobs and a group of Detroit transplants founded "Detroit Nation" in New York about a year ago.
Jacobs tells WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne she was tired of hearing people say "I'm sorry" when she told them she was born and raised in the Detroit area.
Jacobs said Detroit Nation currently has more than 500 members in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Chapters will open soon in Washington D.C. and Seattle.
"These are not people who necessarily want to move back to Detroit," said Jacobs. Instead the group is out to inform their members about strides the city is making so they can become ambassadors for the Motor City in their own cities.
An upcoming NYC event will feature Detroit area musicians, a recent Chicago event featured area artists and business people. Jacobs says Detroit has a "do it yourself" culture not found in other cities which is helping spark a entrepreneurial wave unprecedented in the cities history.
