Detroit Metro Airport Briefly Locked Down After Security Equipment Failure
ROMULUS (WWJ) - Operations are back to normal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after a "security situation" prompted a brief lockdown.
The situation happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the airport's McNamara Terminal.
Airport officials say the lockdown was ordered after an equipment failure at a TSA checkpoint in the terminal's ticket lobby area.
"A piece of screening equipment in the McNamara Terminal had momentarily malfunctioned," Mike McCarthy, Transportation Security Administration spokesperson, said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution TSA temporarily halted screening operations as we worked to review the situation."
Security screening was halted for about 20 minutes while airport personnel addressed the issue.
An investigation into what caused the malfunction is ongoing. An airport spokesperson tells WWJ there are no indications that anything criminal was involved.
