Detroit Men Arrested After 3 Carjackings In Less Than 3 Hours
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two men are now behind bars after three carjackings were reported in Detroit in just a few hours.
Police say formal charges are currently pending against the men, ages 21 and 26, who were arrested around 11:30 a.m. Friday after leaving a stolen vehicle in the Greektown Casino parking garage.
The men first landed on the radar after a carjacking was reported around 11:55 p.m. Thursday in the 4300 block of Leslie. In this incident, police say a 45-year-old woman was exiting her vehicle when the men approached her and announced a robbery. The suspects escaped in the victim's 2008 Chevy Uplander, along with her personal property.
Less than two hours later, another carjacking was reported in the 700 block of W. Jefferson around 1:30 a.m. Friday. In this incident, a 38-year-old man was pumping gas when the men approached and demanded his money. The victim fled the location, leaving the keys in the car, and the suspects escaped in the victim's 2001 Pontiac Sunfire.
Forty-five minutes later, a third carjacking was reported in the 2100 block of St. Antoine, inside the Greektown Casino parking structure. Police say the suspects exited the stolen Pontiac Sunfire and assaulted a 48-year-old man, causing minor injuries. The suspects then escaped in the victim's 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. Police responded to the scene and towed away the stolen Pontiac Sunfire for evidence.
Things appeared to be quieting down until police received a call from a concerned citizen around 11 a.m. Police say the citizen gave them a tip that the suspects returned to the Greektown Casino parking garage and parked the stolen Chrysler Town and Country. The caller told police the suspects then walked to the gas station where the second carjacking had occurred.
Officers responded to the area and arrested the suspects without any incidents at the gas station.
"Thanks to a citizen's tip, these individuals were apprehended within 12 hours," Police Chief Chester Logan said in a statement. "This is the perfect example of what must continue, teamwork, if we are going to win this battle against crime."
