Detroit Man Who Shot, Killed Relatives Gives Himself Up
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a manhunt is over for a mentally disabled man who opened fire on his family Friday night -- killing two and critically wounding his 7-year-old daughter.
Sgt. Eren Stephens said 28-year-old FerDarius Shine checked into a hospital Saturday morning, putting an end to the search that began around 7 p.m. the day before.
Police say the incident happened a home on Winthrop Street, near Greenfield Road on Detroit's west side, when Shine suddenly opened fire on his relatives.
"What we don't know right now is what led to this, but we do know that he had started mumbling some statements that was really not recognizable by the family and then he began to shoot them," said Detroit Police Inspector Dwane Blackmon.
Shine's 66-year-old grandmother and 48-year-old aunt were killed in the shooting. His 7-year-old daughter, who suffered at least one gunshot wound to the body, was rushed to the hospital where she is in critical condition. Shine's mother was also at the home, but she was not shot.
Blackmon said Shine, who is mentally disabled, has a concealed weapons permit. He said police immediately went to work trying to locate Shine, who fled the scene on a bicycle after the shooting.
"We know without a shadow of a doubt that he's a dangerous individual, along with the fact that he shot and fatally shot his own grandmother and his daughter and his aunt. He's definitely a danger to society. We don't know what he's capable of doing at this point," he said.
An investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
