Detroit Man Who Fled Cops Says Police Chase Was On His Bucket List
DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police have heard it all when it comes to excuses — but this may be the most outrageous.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw says a 33-year-old Detroit spotted driving recklessly on I-96 at Greenfield Thursday morning refused to pull over, leading police on a chase.
The man lost control of his Dodge Challenger a short distance away, crashed, and was taken into custody.
Asked why he didn't stop, Shaw said the man told troopers a police chase was on his bucket list.
"I guess he was just being honest that he wanted to cross this off his list," Shaw told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill. "But now his vehicle has been impounded and he faces felony charges as far as fleeing to elude and some other charges."
The man, whose name was not released, also faces a marijuana possession charge after some pot was found in the car.
"So this may have been something that he thought about doing at the very beginning — thinking that it was a joke — but I'm pretty confident that he doesn't think it's a joke any longer," Shaw said.
The man remained jailed pending an arraignment expected to be scheduled for later Thursday.
