Detroit Man Pleads Guilty In Hit-And-Run Death Of Boy
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 47-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old boy whose bike was dragged by an SUV in Detroit.
Alfonso Butler faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced on Dec. 13 on charges of failure to stop at the scene of a serious injury accident and being a habitual fourth offender.
Authorities say Butler was speeding on Detroit's west side Sept. 24 when he struck Darrin Wilhite, who was riding his bike. After the collision, police say Butler continued driving with the child and bike pinned under his vehicle.
Authorities say Darrin was dislodged, but Butler drove off with part of the bike stuck to the vehicle's front end.
Darrin's step-father, Calais Kimling, said the boy's friends saw the accident coming.
"The kids said they told him to stop because they seen the car coming," Kimling said, "and he didn't stop. He kept going, and the car went around the other car and hit him, dragged him a block and dragged the bike a mile."
Butler surrendered and confessed the next day.
