Detroit Man Charged With Setting Multiple Fires In Matter Of Minutes

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 55-year-old man has been charged with arson on accusations he set multiple fires that damaged six houses in Detroit within a few minutes.

Gary Patrick Lewis was arraigned earlier this week in Detroit District Court on two counts of second degree arson and four counts of third degree arson.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Lewis is responsible for setting fire to four vacant houses last Sunday near Detroit's northern city limit. The houses are located in the 20400 block of Hawthorne, the 20500 block of Hull, the 20500 block of Russell, and the 20500 block of Greeley. The fires all were reported between 11:15 a.m. and 11:52 a.m.

Worthy said fires set in the homes on Hawthorne and Hull also spread neighboring houses that were occupied. No one was injured.

Fire Lt. Dennis Richardson said he and another Detroit arson investigator got a tip from area residents and chased down Lewis who was then placed under arrest.

Lewis was ordered held on a $500,000 bond and is due back in court for a preliminary examination on March 17.
