Detroit Man Charged With Murder Livonia Cop's Death
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 48-year-old man arrested following a shootout that killed his brother and a Livonia police officer has been charged with murder.
Terry N. Bowling was arraigned Thursday afternoon in 52nd District Court in Novi on charges including Felony Murder, Home Invasion and Resisting a Police Officer.
Judge Dennis Powers entered a not guilty plea on Bowling's behalf.
WWJ's Stephanie Davis reports that Bowling, who was handcuffed with chains around his waist, only spoke twice during the proceedings -- once to state his name and the second time to say he would need a court-appointed attorney.
Detective Sargeant David Hendrick, with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, recounted Sunday's alleged robbery in Walled Lake that led to Bowling's arrest.
"The defendant and David Bowling were committing a home invasion. And, with their emergency lights activated [the officers] moved in to arrest them. The defendant attempted to flee in a vehicle, but was involved in a collision with two police vehicles. After the collision, the defendant ran from the vehicle but was apprehended a short distance away," Hendrick said.
Terry Bowling is the brother of David Bowling, who police say shot and killed Livonia Officer Larry Nehasil. David Bowling was also fatally shot in that exchange of gunfire.
Terry Bowling was ordered jailed without bond.
Meanwhile, in a related case, four people were slapped with federal drug and weapons charges in connection with what police say was a burglary ring involving the Bowling brothers.
Terry Bowling's ex-wife, 37-year-old Lisa Dunn of Westland, faces up to ten years in prison after being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Federal authorities Dunn exchanged a stolen gun for drugs and acted as the getaway driver in a string of robberies. She was arrested Monday in Westland on an outstanding warrant as a parole absconder.
Also charged in the case are 21-year-old Frederick Hunter and 19-year-old Labrell Jones of Detroit and Jimmy Telfer or Westland.
Memorial services continued Thursday for Officer Nehasil. A vigil was held Wednesday night for the 20-year veteran of the Livonia police force. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
