Detroit Man Charged In His Mother's Murder
Police say Edward Hicks hired someone to gun down his mother, 46-year-old Marion Harris, last month, as she came out of her apartment complex on East Grand Boulevard.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Harris lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to her body. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died.
"This is probably one of the most disturbing, or one of the few cases that you remember. What would lead a son to be engaged in the homicide of his mother? I think that's something that resonated with all of us as seasoned Detroit Police veterans," said Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee, adding that investigators know of a motive but aren't releasing those details yet.
Speaking to reporters, Thursday, Godbee said that a number of "critical" citizen tips made it possible for police to identify Hicks as a suspect in this case.
It was also a citizen tip that led to Hicks's arrest Wednesday on a probation violation in a drug case.
Godbee said the shooter, a black male, has been identified but has not been arrested yet.
Hicks is expected to be charged with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder and habitual offender.
