Detroit Man Charged In Beating Of Elderly Woman

DETROIT (WWJ) - Bond has been set at $1 million for a man who allegedly beat and robbed a 70-year-old Detroit woman last summer.

The 50-year old Christopher Elledge appeared in 36th District Court, Thursday afternoon, for a formal arraignment on home invasion, larceny and assault charges.

Security video captured 70-year old Annie Smith being punched and robbed in her apartment building hallway. The video, released earlier this month, shows the victim opening an outside door allowing the man inside the building before she is attacked. Smith was punched at least twice in the face – once while sprawled across the floor.

Prosecutors say Elledge is the man seen walking away from the scene with personal items and cash.

At the courthouse, WWJ's Pat Sweeting spoke to a 29-year-old woman who said this is the same man who allegedly abused her.

Alicia Williams said she took out a personal protection order against Elledge last summer. Williams said she's happy to hear Elledge is in custody.

"I'm glad that he is not gettin' out, period," Williams said. "He gotta pay for what he did to that Senior Citizen, and he gotta pay for what he did to me," she said.

Williams, who had been in a 6-month relationship with Elledge, sought the PPO after he had allegedly punched her and threw bricks through her window. Williams said he wasn't arrested at the time because people couldn't find him.

Chief Magistrate Millicent Sherman doubled the bond that had been requested by prosecutors.
