Detroit Man Bites Suspect In Attempted Carjacking

DETROIT (WWJ) - He took a bite out of crime -- literally -- when police say a Detroit man stopped a would-be robber with his teeth.

Ferndale Police Lieutenant Bill Wilson said the victim was looking for a bank machine early Sunday morning when the suspect jumped into his car, pointed a gun at him and started pistol-whipping him.

When the robber hit the victim on the nose, he fought back.

"He couldn't get the robber to let go of the gun, so he went for a bite to the hand, which is really a pretty good idea. And the robber did not drop the gun, but he did cause him to retreat," Wilson said.

Wilson said the suspect is still on the loose. He is described as a black male, about 27-years-old and around 150 lbs. He will likely have a bite mark on his left hand.

Wilson said the city has seen a slight spike in robberies.

"We've had more than normal in the recent past," said Wilson. "I don't know what, you know,  you'd attribute that to, whether it's the economy or what, but they have been picking up a bit lately."

Anyone with information about this crime should contact Ferndale Police at (248) 541-3650.
