Detroit Lottery Winner Found Guilty In Landlord's Murder
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit lottery winner has been convicted in the shooting death of his daughter's landlord.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said a jury found 63-year-old Freddie Young guilty Monday of second-degree murder and using a firearm during a felony.
The 45-year-old Greg McNicol was slain in May 2011 outside an apartment building he owned. Authorities say McNichol was arguing with Young's adult daughter about two months of unpaid rent.
Prosecutors say Young was irate over McNicol's attempt to evict his daughter when he drove to the complex, exited his Chevy Avalanche with a .44-caliber revolver and shot McNicol once in the lower abdomen.
Young's lottery club shared a $46.5 million jackpot in February 2011. Each member was to have received about $1.6 million through a cash payout. A judge temporarily froze Young's money after McNicol's widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Young.
Young is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 1 before Circuit Court Judge Linda Parker. He faces up to life in prison.
