Detroit Irish Church Celebrates St. Patrick's Day
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's not all about pots of gold and green beer on this St. Patrick's Day. Most Holy Trinity Church, in Corktown, will once again host it's special "Sharin 'O the Green" mass Thursday morning, starting at 11 am.
Father Russ Kohler said over the decades, the service has become quite an event for politicians from Metro Detroit and around the state.
"I remember one time, Governor Engler was seated in the front row and a mentally challenged parishioner came down the aisle in front of everybody, sat next to the Governor and said 'Scoot over I sit here every day,'" Father Kohler said.
Most Holy Trinity Church has quite a history in Detroit. At 177 years old, it was the first Detroit-English speaking Catholic parish built by the Irish.
Father Russ said today they have grown, just like the city, serving a multi-cultural community.
