Detroit History: Going For Olympic Gold On Woodward Ave.
Marathon runners would have filled the Motor City's best-known street near a brand new 110,000 seat Olympic Stadium, where inside the mammoth oval, track and field medals were being won.
Basketball gold would have been decided at Olympia Stadium, the yachtsmen would have competed on Lake St Clair, while fencers, gymnasts, rowers, boxers and soccer players would have done their best at the University of Detroit and Tiger Stadium had the oh-so-close 1968 Summer Games bid had come through.
"Detroit is the center of a great sports community. We are anxious to open our doors to you all," said President John F. Kennedy.
