Detroit Girl Dies Week After Hit-And-Run Crash Near Ice Cream Truck
DETROIT (WWJ) - An 8-year-old girl who was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she was trying to get ice cream on Detroit's west side has died from her injuries.
Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office spokeswoman Mary Mazur said Kamari Smith died Monday morning at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
Mazur said Smith suffered severe trauma to her head, spine and internal organs when she was struck May 19 while standing near an ice cream truck on Robeson Street near Fenkell and Greenfield. The vehicle that struck her was traveling around 50 miles per hour. Police say the driver briefly stopped, then fled the scene.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Two Detroit men have been charged in the incident -- 23-year-old Cortney Shields and 19-year-old Leonard Crosby. Shields is charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death. Crosby is charged with accessory after the fact.
