Detroit Firefighters Evacuated From Burning Building Over HAZMAT Concern
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit firefighters were called out of a burning building on the city's east side that might be filled with hazardous chemicals.
The fire started Wednesday morning at a commercial building complex in the 1600 block of Farnsworth, just east of I-75 and Warren Avenue.
Firefighters responded to the scene and initially were fighting the flames from inside the building. An evacuation was ordered after officials realized the building might contain hazardous materials. A HAZMAT team has been called to the scene.
Dale Bradley, Chief of Community Relations with the Detroit Fire Department, said the fire is under control, and firefighters are continuing to work from outside of the building.
A fire chief on the scene told WWJ's Vickie Thomas it appears that four separate fires were set inside of the building, although an official cause remains under investigation.
No injuries were reported.
