Detroit Firefighters Battle Blaze At Warehouse
DETROIT (WWJ) - The sun wasn't even out yet, but the heat made an already-tough job even tougher for firefighters in southwest Detroit Thursday morning.
A fire broke out just after midnight at Composite Forgings on West Jefferson at 15th Street, along the Detroit River in the shadow of the Ambassador Bridge.
Chief Tracy Thomas said no one was inside the building when it caught fire.
"There's property damage, no life or limb, nobody's hurt, nothing of that nature, just a lot of property damage. All firefighters are OK, we took a precautionary measure to the situation right away," he said.
It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire, although reports say a gas leak is to blame.
Detroit is in the midst of a week-long heat wave. Even before the sun rose Thursday morning, temperatures were in the upper 70s and humidity levels were very high.
Thomas said the heat impacted the first firefighters on the scene, but the river has been providing some relief.
"Earlier it was hot because it was a pretty intense fire, but at the same time, right now there's a nice breeze going and everybody is doing fine now," he said.
