Firefighters Hospitalized After Battling Two-Alarm Fire On Detroit's West Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two firefighters are recovering in the hospital after suffering apparent smoke inhalation following a two-alarm fire at a commercial building on Detroit's west side.
The fire took off Monday night at General Merchandise Liquidation Surplus Outlet, a two-story commercial building on 8 Mile Road at Stansbury, about four blocks west of Schaefer. The fire also spread to a nearby building.
Crews dealt with bitter cold conditions, trying to keep the fire hoses from freezing and their fire equipment from overheating.
According to reports, two firefighters crawled out of the building and collapsed after their oxygen tanks apparently gave out while they were inside. Information on the injured firefighters was not immediately released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
