Detroit Council Pushes Parent Participation

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy solicited support from Detroit City Council for her controversial parental participation proposal.  WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton reports Worthy is beginning with Detroit and plans to solicit support from other cities in Wayne County.

Worthy admitted, "People hate this idea for the most part, they say we should not have to legislate parental involvement  in schools, this is the government getting involved, and I tell them, we didn't have to legislate texting while driving or wearing seats belts either, but we have to do that sometime."

In proposing this ordinance Worthy explained, "If this does nothing but spur the conversation or bylaws about what we have to do to, unfortunately,  force some parents to be involved in their children's education, and my feeling is, that there should be an ordinance, rule or statute, something, that mandates that parents should attend at least one parent teacher conference a year at their children's school."

Worthy's ordinance received verbal support from many Council members and Council President Charles Pugh has sent the ordinance to committee for further discussion.
