Detroit Council Hold Public Meetings On Proposed District Maps
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit City Council is hosting public meetings to gather comments on four different draft maps that slice Detroit into seven voting districts for City Council and Board of Police Commissioner seats.
Currently, the city's nine council members are elected at-large. Under the new charter approved by Detroit voters last November, each Council member is to be elected in one of seven districts and two of the Council members will be elected at-large.
The public hearings on the proposed City Council districts will be held:
- Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile Rd.
- Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 a.m. at Second Ebenezer Church, 14601 DeQuindre
- Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 58, 1358 Abbott St.
- Friday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Maron Center, 11466 Kercheval Ave.
The four discussion maps were drawn by the Detroit City Planning Commission following the boundaries of the voting precincts, which were revised by Elections at the end of 2011.
The City Council has until February 17 to choose one of the proposed maps.
