Detroit City Council Supports Resolution For A Regional Transit Authority
DETROIT (WWJ) - Legislative leaders from across southeast Michigan will meet on Friday in Macomb County to talk about regional transportation.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton reports Detroit City Council Tuesday demonstrated its support for a Regional Transit Authority.
Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown introduced the resolution in advance of Friday's summit meeting Southeast Michigan Regional Summit in Macomb County.
"The resolution supports the creation of a Regional Transit Authority, it explains the social and economic benefits of one, it does not talk governance or financing," said Brown.
Detroit City Council president Charles Pugh spoke about the need for a regional transportation authority.
"For us to be able to get the federal dollars that are coming out of our checks but are being spent in other parts of the country, we need a regional transit authority - for the right amount of dollars to come to advance mass transit in southeast Michigan," said Pugh.
The structure and funding for a regional transit authority has not yet been determined.
