Detroit Cab Driver Shoots Man During Robbery Attempt
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police in Detroit say a cab driver was forced to take things into this own hands when a man tried to rob him.
According to police, the 58-year-old taxi driver was operating a Yellow Checker cab around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 near the I-96 service drive on the city's west side when he stopped in the 4800 block of Spokane to retrieve information.
While he was stopped on the side of the road, police say 32-year-old Richard Miles approached the cab and forced his way into the vehicle, demanding money.
Police say the cab driver, who is a licensed CPL holder, retrieved his weapon and fired a shot, striking Miles in the body.
Officers arrived on the scene and Miles was arrested without any incident. After an investigation, a warrant request was submitted for review.
Miles was charged with one count of unarmed robbery, and one count of assault with intent to rob while unarmed. He was arraigned on Dec. 4, at a local hospital, and bond was set at $75,000.00. He's due back in court for a preliminary exam on Dec. 17.
