Details Emerge In Crash That Killed Sorority Sisters
TOLEDO (WWJ) - We're learning more about the wrong-way crash near Toledo that killed three Bowling Green State University students and the elderly woman who police say caused the accident.
Authorities in Ohio say a state trooper had been pursuing 69-year-old Winifried Lein when she hit another vehicle head-on.
Sergeant Nathan Henn with Ohio State Highway Patrol said the trooper was stopped on I-75 North when he saw Lein headed in the wrong direction on I-75 South.
"He activated his overhead lights before she reached him. She continued on southbound. He turned around, attempted to catch up to her and, shortly thereafter, is when the crash occurred," Henn said.
Police are still investigating why Lein was driving the wrong way.
The accident happened early Friday morning as the young women headed for Detroit Metro Airport where they were flying out for a spring break trip.
Services will be held in Bay City Wednesday for Christina Goyett, the 19-year-old Michigan native killed in the crash.
