Design Chosen For Asian Carp Fencing
Indiana wildlife officials have picked a design for an aquatic fence to be installed in a 700-acre marsh as part of an effort to keep adult Asian carp from slipping into the Great Lakes.
Biologists say they fear the invasive fish could destroy the Great Lakes' fishing industry by starving out native species.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman Phil Bloom says the agency decided Tuesday to install a 10-foot-tall chain-link fence this summer across about 1,300 feet of Eagle Marsh near Fort Wayne.
During flooding, the fencing should block adult Asian carp from swimming from the Wabash River into the Maumee River, and then onto Lake Erie. Smaller carp would be able to swim through, but Bloom says that's unlikely.
