Democrats To Name Court, Education Board Favorites
DETROIT (AP) - Democrats are preparing to choose their favorites for this fall's Michigan Supreme Court and education board races, hoping once again to give their candidates a five-month jump in fundraising and campaigning over Republican rivals.
Democrats can't nominate candidates until the party's fall convention in September, so votes at Saturday's state convention at Detroit's Cobo Center are nonbinding. Republicans will nominate their candidates in August.
Candidates for three university boards, the State Board of Education and the Michigan Supreme Court are seeking endorsements.
The convention also will feature an appearance by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who's seeking a third six-year term.
Democratic President Barack Obama was on the Feb. 28 presidential primary ballot, but those votes didn't count. Democrats plan to name their presidential favorite at May 5 party caucuses.
