Debate: Spend Or Save Potential Michigan Budget Bonus
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Michigan's state government may have wound up bringing in more money than previously expected for the fiscal year that ended in September.
The numbers aren't final yet. But legislative fiscal agencies are estimating the state might have an extra $285 million or more it wasn't anticipating.
Michigan lawmakers will debate whether to spend or save the extra money if it materializes.
Republicans would prefer to use the money to pay off debt or pad the state's rainy day fund. Democrats say their top priority would be to restore a portion of budget cuts made to public education.
It likely will take a few months for the revenue numbers to be finalized and for lawmakers to determine what to do with the money.
