Dearborn Police ID Suspect In Benihana Shooting

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Police have identified the man who allegedly opened fire at a popular Japanese restaurant in Dearborn.

Police Chief Ron Haddad said investigators are trying to track down 28-year-old Darrius Demarr Greene, of Detroit, in connection with Tuesday's shooting at Benihana Restaurant that injured a 43-year-old Ann Arbor man.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has issued multiple charges against Greene, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm in a building, and felony firearm.

Anybody coming into contact with Greene, or who may know his whereabouts, is asked not to approach him but to contact police immediately. Greene should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police say Greene, an ex-convict, opened fire inside the restaurant, located just outside the Fairlane Town Center mall, after a fight broke out around 9 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach, but no sign of the gunman. Despite the restaurant being "packed" at the time of the shooting, no other injuries were reported.

The victim, who was not identified, was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators believe the shooting wasn't a random act and that Greene had previous interactions with the victim.

"This type of violent criminal activity, that puts citizen's lives in jeopardy, will not be tolerated. The Dearborn Police Department will expend all resources available to continue to investigate this case and locate and apprehend Greene.," Haddad said.

Greene is described as 6'2" tall and 145 lbs. with a medium build. He has the word "Forever" tattooed on the left side of his neck, "Fast Lane" tattooed on the right side of his neck, and "God Bless Detroit's Own" tattooed on his right forearm.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Greene was most recently released on bond in Feb. 2011 after serving a mandatory two years in prison on firearm charges. Other previous offenses include fleeing a police officer -- third degree, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and receiving and concealing stolen property.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dearborn Police tip line at 313-943-3012.
