Dearborn Celebrates Mubarak's Resignation
DEARBORN (WWJ) - About 300,000 Metro Detroiters have roots in the Arab world. Friday afternoon, people were milling in and out of Dearborn's New Yasmin Bakery, talking about the news that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down.
WWJ's Beth Fisher spoke with Kamel Al Ajami of Southfield, who came to the U.S. from Egypt 1984. He said today's events are a result of peaceful demonstrations.
"It just takes 18 days to understand what the people want. This is the problem with the regime -- we try to just live our lives peacefully, over there... to support Democracy. What we want was just freedom from the military, from the corruption," he said.
Al Ajami, who still has family back in Egypt, says they're doing okay.
A rally celebrating Mubarak's resignation was scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at the Lebanese American Heritage Club in Dearborn.
Arab American News publisher Osama Siblani said he was not sure how many people will attend the rally, but expected the hall to be filled because people "are very excited about this.''
Following weeks of protests, Egypt's vice president Omar Suleiman announced Friday that Mubarak handed control of the country to the military. (More on this story here).
