Deadly Shooting On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Homicide detectives are investigating on Detroit's east side following a deadly overnight shooting.

According to Detroit police investigators, 37-year-old Brandon Johnson was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking. Police said the suspect shot Johnson as he was sitting in an SUV with a woman who was not injured.

WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas reported it was an emotional scene as relatives and friends of the victim arrived where police had cordoned off a

section of the road outside Martin Luther King Apartments on Lafayette and Chene.

The victim's grandmother, Amanda Edwards, heard the shots.

"I heard two shots at 3:20, because when I hear something like that, I always open my eyes and look at the clock," Edwards said. "And the clock said 3:20, so I just laid on there and then a couple of seconds later, I heard footsteps run by my patio. I was upstairs, but I didn't get up then til I heard my daughter open the door."

His father, Gregory Edwards, said Johnson was a great son and a great dad to his 7-year-old daughter.

"Wherever you saw Brandon you saw his daughter," said Edwards. "He's a church-going man. He's a hard worker. He's a family man. We're going to miss him so very much. We spent so much time together," he said.

Relatives said Johnson worked at Henry Ford Hospital.
