Deadline Extended For Wayne County Homeowners Facing Foreclosure
DETROIT (AP) — Officials in Detroit and Wayne County have extended a deadline for home owners to avoid tax foreclosure.
The deadline is Aug. 31, but home owners must sign up by Aug. 24 to be candidates for the Right of Refusal program.
The extended deadline applies only to low-income residents who own or currently live in homes that have been foreclosed and are at risk for being sold at auction in September.
Under the program, the city purchases tax-foreclosed homes from Wayne County and passes the properties along to the United Community Housing Coalition. The coalition works with the renters and homeowners to rebuy the homes on affordable payment plans.
Proceeds from the sales are used to buy more homes facing tax foreclosure.
About 120 homeowners have signed up for the program.
