Day Of Pampering For Homeless Women Puts Self-Esteem First
DETROIT (WWJ) - A number of metro area women whose lives are not at their greatest point right now will end this day with pleasant memories that will keep them smiling for a long time.
WWJ's Pat Sweeting reports on the day of 'Pampering and Self-Esteem Workshops'.
Event participant Melanie LaBrie entered a homeless shelter two weeks ago after realizing her life had to change.
"Due to my addiction - I ended up homeless and in the streets, and I decided I wanted to change my life so I got into the homeless shelter," said LaBrie.
LaBrie was one of about fifty homeless women who took part in the day of pampering sponsored by Full and Fabulous. She now has a better understanding of why her life was in a downward spiral.
"Not having determination or self-esteem ... I didn't want to die out there. I see too many people dying in the street," LaBrie said.
Gathered at Don Bosco Community Hall in Detroit, the event provided the woman with hair styling, manicures, massages, clean clothing and more.
LaDonna Bay, who lives in a shelter in Pontiac, told Sweeting that she never envisioned herself being involved in something like this.
"It gives me something that I know I can move forward with. We all have our situations that we have to live with and we all just come together and embrace the now and knowing that we can feel nice for one day. It gives you a boost," said Bay.
