Dave Dombrowski Officially Introduced In Boston

Former Tigers general manager and president Dave Dombrowski was officially introduced in Boston today as the Red Sox' president of baseball operations. One of his first duties will be to hire a new GM for the Sox, after Ben Cherington declined to stay onboard in that position. He said there will be "no timeline" for such a search.
At Dombrowski's introductory press conference, he touched on his time in Detroit, which ended abruptly and unexpectedly earlier this month. He was asked specifically about the Tigers' analytics staff, and if it was different from what he would be dealing with in Boston.
Dombrowski: "We did not have as big an analytical department as some other organizations do, for various reasons. …"

Dombrowski: "But I did have people in our office that would give you any analytics you wanted to get. And I asked for a lot of information."

Dombrowski also did not deny the possibility of hiring Tigers officials to be part of his staff in Boston.

Although the Red Sox are in last place of the AL East, and well below the .500 mark, the move to hire Dombrowski was one for the long term. Dombrowski has made a name for himself for being able to build, rather than swiftly deal for, a winning team. And he says that the platform to do so is in place in Boston.
"We want to do it (win) in a way that we sustain that and do it in the right fashion where year in and year out, you can do that," he said. "If your total focus is just trying to win at a particular time at all costs, you end up trading a lot more players than you normally would. Right here, the foundation to do it the right way is in place."
