Dan Dickerson's Game Recap 5-4-11
Brad Penny pitched six strong innings, and Scott Sizemore gave the Tigers offense a lift with three hits in his first game of the year, and the Tigers snapped a seven game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees. Austin Jackson and Sizemore doubled in the first to help the Tigers jump out to a 2-0 lead against CC Sabathia. After the Yankees cut the lead to 2-1 on a Russell Martin double in the 4th, Casper Wells threw out Andruw Jones at home to end the inning. A Jackson triple in the 5th after a walk to Brandon Inge made it 3-1, then Sizemore made it 4-1 with his third hit of the night. Penny gave up just one run on six hits in his six innings - he needed 50 pitches to get through the first two innings, then just 48 to get through the next four. He gets the win to improve to 2-3. Daniel Schlereth worked two solid innings of relief - giving up one run on a Teixeira home run, then Valverde closed it out for his 6th save of the year.
-Notable: Magglio Ordonez finished 2-4, his first two hit game since April 6th. Sizemore finished 3-4 with an RBI; Jackson finished 2-5 with a double and a triple. The Tigers top 3 hitters had a combined seven hits - highest total of the year.
