Dan Dickerson Recaps The Tigers 7-1 Win Over The Royals

The Detroit Tigers head into the All Star break playing their best baseball of the year. The Tigers completed a three game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 7-1 win on Sunday, extending their winning streak to a season-high five games. Home runs powered the Tigers in this game: Jhonny Peralta hit a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Then, after the Royals cut the Tigers lead to 2-1 on a Salvador Perez home run, Delmon Young hit his 4th home run in as many days in the fourth inning, and the Tigers lead, 3-1. With the score still 3-1, the Tigers put two on with one out in the 5th, and with Prince Fielder coming to the plate, Royals manager Ned Yost decided to replace his starter - Everett Teaford - with another lefty, reliever Tim Collins. On Collins first pitch - Fielder launched a 431 foot home run to right that gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead. That was more than enough for Max Scherzer: Scherzer went seven strong innings for his 8th win of the year. Scherzer allowed just one run on 5 hits, with one walk (the first batter of the game) and seven strikeouts. Over his final four starts before the break, Scherzer had a 2.00ERA, walked four and struck out 33 in 27 innings of work.
The Tigers head into the break three and a half games behind the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers have gone 18-10 after falling a season-high 6 games below .500 at 26-32. The Tigers open the second half of the season on the road against the Orioles on Friday.
