Dan Dickerson Recaps The Tigers 13-12 Win Over The Red Sox

By: Dan Dickerson

In one of the most incredible games played in Comerica Park's 13 year history, the Tigers came from three runs down in the 9th inning to tie the game, and two runs down in the 11th inning to beat Boston 13-12 on a two-run, walk-off home run from Alex Avila.

Almost five hours earlier, the Tigers had jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Clay Buchholz in the first inning when Jhonny Peralta doubled in three runs on a drive to deep left center that went in and out of the glove of a diving Jacoby Ellsbury. But by the top of the third, the Red Sox had chased Tigers' starter Max Scherzer, and had a 7-5 lead. The Tigers tied the game at 7 with two runs in the fourth, but Adrian Gonzalez drilled a two-run home run deep to right off Daniel Schlereth in the 6th to give the Red Sox a 9-7 lead. The Sox tacked on a run in the 9th, and the Tigers went to the bottom of the 9th trailing, 10-7. Alfredo Aceves came on to try to close it out for Boston - but Austin Jackson led off the inning with his fourth hit of the day, a single to right. Brennan Boesch followed with an infield single, then Miguel Cabrera jumped on the first pitch he saw and launched a three-run home run down the left field line to tie the game, 10-10.

The Red Sox scored two in the eleventh off of Joaquin Benoit to make it 12-10, and once again, the Tigers were down to their final three outs. With Mark Melancon on the mound, Cabrera started the winning rally with a one-out single to right. With the infield over-shifted to right, Prince Fielder bounced a single into left to put two men on. A wild pitch put Cabrera at third, then Delmon Young brought him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 12-11. Avila represented the Tigers' last hope. The count went to 2-2; he fouled off a tough curveball to stay alive, then drove a ball just over the wall in right field for an amazing, two-run, walk-off home run, and one incredible 13-12 win.
