Dan Dickerson Recaps The Tigers 10-8 Win Over The Indians
By: Dan Dickerson
There are comebacks, there are great comebacks, and then there's Sunday's Tigers comeback against the Indians. Down by three in the bottom of the tenth, with two outs and nobody on, the Tigers rallied for five runs and beat the Indians, 10-8, on a walkoff HR from Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers trailed all afternoon, rallied to tie the game three times, and then had a great chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth: Austin Jackson lead off the 9th with his second triple of the day. But after Omar Infante struck out, Indians manager Manny Acta had reliever Josh Tomlin walk Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder intentionally to load the bases. Acta then took right fielder Shin Soo Choo out, and added a fifth infielder for Quintin Berry...who bounced into a 3-2-3 inning ending double play, sending the game into extra innings.
In the tenth, the Indians hit back-to-back home runs off Joaquin Benoit to take a 7-5 lead, then added another run on a Lou Marson double to make it 8-5. Cleveland closer Chris Perez took the mound in the bottom of the tenth, and got two easy outs to start the inning. Perez was one out away from being eight for eight in saves against the Tigers this year when he walked Alex Avila. Pinch hitter Andy Dirks worked Perez for a walk, bringing up Austin Jackson. Jackson ripped a 2-0 pitch down the left field line for an RBI double, and the Tigers were down, 8-6. Omar Infante then hit a soft line drive single into CF to bring home Jackson and Dirks, and the game was tied, 8-8. Cabrera stepped to the plate, worked the count to 3-1, and then launched a 3-run home run into the visiting bullpen - capping off one of the most improbable comebacks you will ever see.
