Dan Dickerson Recaps Game 4 Of The ALCS (With Audio)
The Tigers are headed back to the World Series. The Tigers completed a four game wipeout of the New York Yankees with an 8-1 win in game four yesterday. The Tigers equaled their home run total through the first eight playoff games by hitting four home runs, and Max Scherzer was superb through five and two-thirds innings - striking out 10.
The Tigers jumped on CC Sabathia early, scoring runs in the first and third innings. Then the Tigers knocked Sabathia out of the game in the fourth. Cabrera delivered the big blow - an absolute monster of a home run to left to make it 4-0. Peralta followed with a two-run shot of his own three batters later to make it 6-0, and the outcome was not in doubt after that.
The Tigers pitching and the Yankees inability to hit was really something to see...some highlights:
-Tigers starters allowed just two runs in 27 innings of work in the four games, and allowed just 14 hits.
-The Yankees scored 1 run before the ninth inning in four games - 32 innings...and scored in just 3 innings out of 39.
-The Tigers held the Yankees to just 6 runs in the series, the lowest total in an ALCS since 1990, and the third-lowest total in a best-of-seven series since Baltimore allowed just 2R in the 1966 World Series.
-The Yankees hit .157 in the four games.
-The Yankees have played in 73 post-season series....this was just the fourth time they had been swept.
The Tigers now wait for the winner of the Cardinals-Giants series. Game one of the World Series will be next Wednesday in the National League city.
