Cyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run
Monroe County authorities are seeking the driver of a white minivan they believe was responsible for fatally striking a 51-year-old bicyclist in Monroe.
The incident happened at about 1:20 p.m. Sunday on North Monroe Street -- when authorities say Anthony Stemen of Newport, riding an adult three-wheeled bicycle, was struck from behind by a Chevy Venture.
While the minvan fled, deputies were able to identify the make and model by parts left on the scene. Police said the van has a broken windshield, and speed may have been a factor.
Stemen was pronounced dead at a hospital.
WWJ spoke with Tracy Stemen, the victim's brother, who said the family is in shock, and looking for help.
"If the public can just keep an eye out for anyone looking to get repairs. If they see anything -- any vehicles with damage on the front end and, like I said, on the windshield, and report it to the police," he said.
An investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
