Crews Set To Repair Goodrich Cemetery Vandalism
Detroit (WWJ) - It's going to take the National Guard, the Romeo High School football team and a funeral director, but by Saturday afternoon, the vandalism that destroyed a historic Macomb County cemetery should be history. Richard Coury is Supervisor of Bruce Township. The cemetery pre-dates the Civil War with five veterans of that war buried there.
The cemetery is in a remote area off Kidder road and police don't have any leads in the case. "Those tombstones were so old, I don't think they even got any fingerprints," said Coury adding "They completely destroyed the cemetery."
"By tomorrow afternoon it's gonna look good. It's gonna look probably better than it's looked in a hundred years," said Coury. A National Guard troop near Lansing heard about the vandalism and offered to help.
The tombstones at Goodrich Cemetery will be re-assembled and cleaned up Saturday by volunteers. Coury has received plenty of offers of help in the restoration project and has started turning people away. "The outpouring has been tremendous. This is a very tiny cemetery." said Coury. "Find something in your area and do some good there. We're good for tomorrow," he added cheerfully.
