Crew Moves 250-Year-Old Bur Oak Tree From U-M Campus

ANN ARBOR (AP) — A Texas company has relocated a 250-year-old tree to make way for an expansion of the University of Michigan's business school.
A transporter on Saturday conveyed the 65-foot-tall bur oak about 500 feet down a pedestrian mall to a spot near its new home. The tree will be placed in the ground Sunday.
Transporting the tree is expected to cost up to $400,000. The amount is included in the $135 million price tag for the donor-funded expansion of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
On Saturday, dozens of onlookers in windows and behind protective fencing cheered as the tree slowly made its way toward its destination next to the front of the business school.
An Environmental Design official says the tree has an excellent chance of surviving the relocation.
