Crash Injures 5 Girls En Route To Basketball Game
LOWELL (AP) - Authorities say at least three girls are critically injured after their SUV crashed on Interstate 96 in western Michigan as they traveled to a high school basketball game.
Phil Dougherty, a local fire chief in Kent County, tells The Grand Rapids Press that the three were ejected from the vehicle near Lowell. Two other girls were also in the car Friday.
The five are from Grand Haven High School.
They were traveling to Michigan State University to watch the school's girls basketball team in the state semifinals. Buses carrying other students passed the crash scene.
Grand Haven Tribune sports writer Nate Thompson says fog played a role. He says the Honda SUV plowed through a metal barrier and landed on its side.
