I-94 Reopens After Cement Truck Crash
I-94 westbound near Allen Park has been reopened as crews worked to remove a huge freeway sign that was taken out by a truck most of Monday.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reported from the scene that a double-bottomed cement hauler struck the overhead freeway sign and overturned, shutting down the freeway westbound for hours at Oakwood.
Frank Kennedy was right behind that semi. He says a tire blew, causing the hauler to hit a freeway sign overhead, which came crashing down onto the truck.
Kennedy was among three people who stopped to help.
"We started running up to the semi, and the guy was laying under part of the hood of the semi, and we pulled that off of him...He didn't even, like, make any sense. There was no words, just like mumbles...and he was completely covered in dirt and soot," Kennedy said.
The injured driver was taken to the hospital. He is in serious condition.
Traffic was routed off I-94 at Oakwood and towards the Southfield Freeway to rejoin I-94. The freeway reopened after 4 p.m.
Surface streets were reported jammed. Stay with WWJ for the latest during Traffic and Weather on the 8s.
