Suspected drunk driver strikes parked Michigan State Police car in Saginaw County
SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A Michigan State Police vehicle, parked for investigation of an accident, was struck and smashed by a suspected drunk driver.
The crash into the patrol car happened about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday on northbound Interstate 75, near the M-46 exit at milepost 149 in Buena Vista Township, reported the Michigan State Police, Bay District.
The trooper was standing outside and jumped away from the collision. But that officer, along with occupants of the wrecked vehicle from the original crash, were injured as a result. They were all taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The at-fault driver who struck the patrol car was then arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, state police said.
In the meantime, the MSP district posted a reminder on social media to drivers to move into another lane that if there are emergency vehicles along the road. All 50 states have "Move Over" laws that order motorists to either change lanes or slow down when approaching police, fire or emergency vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says.
Michigan Department of Transportation reported all northbound lanes of I-75 in that area were closed as a result of the accident. The interstate re-opened shortly before 9:30 a.m.
The incident is still under investigation.
