3 People Thrown From SUV, Killed In Overnight Crash On I-94; 1 In Critical Condition
DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say three people were killed when they were ejected from a speeding SUV during an overnight crash on I-94 in Detroit.
The one-car accident happened around 1:10 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-94 near Helen Avenue, just past Mt. Elliott on the city's east side.
Michigan State Police say a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was travelling at "a very high rate of speed" when the driver lost control, went up the freeway embankment and struck a light pole.
The SUV rolled several times back onto the freeway, ejecting the driver, front passenger and one rear passenger. Two of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene -- a 20-year-old female and a male whose age hasn't been determined -- while the third later died at a local hospital.
A fourth passenger who was sitting in the back seat had to be extricated from the SUV by firefighters. That person remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Names of those involved have not yet been released.
Police say it's unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The freeway was closed for several hours following the crash, but has since reopened.
