Council Committee Keeps DPS Issue On Agenda

Detroit City Council again today wrestled with the question of who should control Detroit Public Schools even though attorneys have advised council that DPS is not under its jurisdiction.

Council's Internal Operations Committee has voted three-to-one to put Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown's resolution on whether Detroit voters want to keep the current Detroit school board on the formal agenda.

The matter failed on a technicality yesterday when council decided 5-4 against placing the schools issue on the agenda.  But this time it's coming through a committee.

Committee chair and councilwoman, Brenda Jones, was the lone, no-vote.

"We're not looking at our own issues that we have right here at this table that the city council has," Jones said.  "And I think we need to address those issues and get our own house in order."

The resolution by councilman Gary Brown is calling for an approval of an Advisory Ballot question.

Council as a whole is scheduled to vote this week on whether to put Brown's proposal on the November ballot.
