Could Prince Fielder Be An MVP?
By: Terry Foster
Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder is hot as a fire cracker. He is hitting home runs. He is hitting for average and he is hitting line drives all over the Place. He won't keep up this torrid pace but everybody I talked to last season said to watch out for Fielder. They said once he learned American League hitting it would be lights out.
So far, so good. Fielder was named American League player of the week after hitting .632 with two home runs, four doubles and 11 RBIs. He is a hitting machine and is knocking line drives all over the Place. It really took off on Opening Day at Comerica Park when he mashed two home runs against the New York Yankees. For the season he is batting .429 with four home runs and 19 RBIs.
He won't keep up this pace but Fielder has the talent and determination to become the third straight Tiger to win the AL Most Valuable Player. We saw Justin Verlander win the Cy Young and MVP two years ago and Miguel Cabrera won the Triple Crown and the MVP last season. Now Fielder is the hottest Tiger.
That is all great and I love seeing these numbers. But the only numbers that matter now are the post-season numbers. It is not enough for Fielder to be hot in the regular season but he must also be hot during the post season -- something he failed to do.
It is championship or bust now for the Tigers.
