Cornerstone Unveils $500K Sculpture By New York Artist
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Cornerstone University has unveiled a $500,000 stainless steel sculpture at its new $14 million Christ Chapel.
The Grand Rapids Press reports that the sculpture was done over a year by renowned Rochester, New York, artist Albert Paley and a group of skilled welders, finishers and painters. It was funded by donors.
The sculpture depicts the "transformational claims of Jesus," and contains biblical symbols such as the Star of Bethlehem and the cross. It is titled "Let There Be Light." The sculpture is 12 feet tall and 25 feet wide. It is made of 37 individual pieces, each weighing 100 to 400 pounds.
Paley holds an endowed chair at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His sculptures are in major museums in the U.S. and abroad.
