Conyers Seeks Help As Prison Date Looms
The wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers isn't giving up in her bid to avoid reporting to prison in about three weeks. Monica Conyers' lawyer filed papers Monday asking an appeals court to intervene.
On Sept. 10, the former Detroit City Council member is due at a federal prison to begin a 37-month sentence for corruption.
She wants to remain free while an appeal is pending, but a federal judge in Detroit has denied the request.
The appeal is based on Judge Avern Cohn's refusal to allow Monica Conyers to withdraw her guilty plea on the day she was sentenced for taking bribes from a sludge contractor.
