'Concert Of Colors' Celebrates Cultural Diversity In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Musical artists from around the world come together in Motown for a celebration of ethnic diversity. The 19th annual "Concert of Colors" kicks off Thursday at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History.
Some of the featured artists include Susheela Raman, Amp Fiddler and Immigrant Suns. Ishmael Ahmed, event director, spoke to WWJ about some of the other artists set to perform.
"We'll have Bettye LaVette playing, we'll have a gay named Nanny Assis, who just won the best vocalist in Brazil, a Columbian band called Folklore Urbano, as well as reggae and African bands and so, so much more," Ahmed said.
Concert of Colors runs through Sunday at several different Detroit venues, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and Orchestra Hall. All performances are free and open to the public.
"This is a real collective effort, you know, a lot of the events are you bring in the big star and people come to it, but this is about community and diversity and bringing people together in Midtown," Ahmed said.
Concert of Colors will also collect new and gently used musical instruments from festival goers on July 16 and 17 to help ensure that future generations of metro Detroiters learn to play and enjoy music.
